Troubleshoot a Fanuc Spindle Drive Alarm 33

What is Fanuc AC Serial Spindle Drive Alarm 33?

A Fanuc Drive Alarm 33 is generated by the CNC when it detects that the top board is receiving insufficient DC voltage. Here is the Fanuc Spindle Drive Alarm 33 message:

Alarm CodeMessageDescription
33Insufficient DC link section charging

Detects insufficient charging of direct current power supply voltage in the power circuit section when the magnetic contactor in the amplifier is turned on.

Fanuc Alarm 33 covers the following Spindle Drive product series:

If your unit falls under the A06B-6062, A06B-6063, or A06B-6064 product series and has generated a Fanuc Alarm 33, you will need to check and test the PCBs to properly troubleshoot the issue.

How to Troubleshoot a Fanuc Spindle Drive Alarm 33:

Step 1

Check all the jumpers, especially the S5 jumper.

Step 2

Apply three-phase power to the drive and turn on the control.

Step 3

If the drive comes up with a display, then check test pins VDC and SDC to the ZERO volt test pin. All three pins are located on the A16B-2201-0440 PCB with the LED display. The VDC and SDC to the ZERO volt test pin reading should both measure close to 3 volts DC.

Step 4

If the VDC and SDC to the ZERO volt test pin reading doesn’t measure close to 3 volts DC, then measure the DC voltage between the B+ and B- test pins. The B+ and B- test pins are located on the A20B-2000-0220 PCB. There should be 300 volts DC across the B+ and B- test pins. Make sure you can hear the contactor in the drive engage.

Fanuc Spindle Drive Alarm 33 Diagnosis:

Diagnosis A

If the B+ and B- test pins DO measure 300 volts DC, then there is probably a problem with the alarm circuitry on the drive, i.e. the Fanuc Spindle Drive Alarm 33 was inaccurately detected and generated. Verify that the LEG-TO- LEG and LEG-TO-GROUND AC voltage into the drive is correct.

Diagnosis B

If the B+ and B- test pins DO measure 300 volts DC, then there is probably a problem with the alarm circuitry on the drive, i.e. the Fanuc Spindle Drive Alarm 33 was inaccurately detected and generated. Verify that the LEG-TO- LEG and LEG-TO-GROUND AC voltage into the drive is correct.
